Abstract

This study determined the effectiveness of the Fluent Futures: A Junior High School Speaking Manual in improving the speaking fluency of Grade 10 students through scenario-based learning activities. The study employed a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design using intact classes. A total of 83 Grade 10 students from Upper Katungal National High School participated in the study, with 43 students assigned to the control group and 40 students assigned to the experimental group. The experimental group utilized the Fluent Futures speaking manual for seven weeks through structured scenario-based activities such as role-playing, storytelling, debates, and public speaking exercises, while the control group received conventional instruction. Findings revealed that the manual obtained very satisfactory ratings in terms of acceptability and excellent ratings in overall quality. Results also showed improvement in the speaking fluency of students exposed to the intervention. However, the study identified significant pre-intervention differences between the groups, indicating limitations in baseline equivalence. Despite this limitation, the findings suggest that scenario-based instructional materials may positively contribute to students’ oral communication development when implemented systematically.
