Abstract
This qualitative phenomenological research design aimed to describe the experiences of the Junior High School Dulangan-Manobo learners of Hinalaan Integrated School in learning English. It tried to reveal their ways, challenges, and coping mechanisms in learning the language. Using purposive criterion sampling, eight learners proficient in English were selected as participants. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi’s framework. Findings revealed that learners employed various ways, such as teachers’ mentorship, constant reading, tutorials, translation of English to Tagalog, and constant studying. However, they faced challenges such as lack of support system at home, comprehension difficulties, and difficulty in word recognition. Nevertheless, using a dictionary, and seeking assistance were the key strategies to overcome these challenges. Thus, the school must strengthen the implementation of “Catch-up Friday” to provide the learners with more opportunities for instruction and skill reinforcement to improve their English proficiency. Moreover, comprehensive English learning tools and resources like bilingual dictionaries, educational applications, and interactive language software were encouraged to help the learners learn English better.
