Abstract

This study explored the lived experiences of parents raising children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) at the Kiamba Central School SPED Center, Division of Sarangani, Philippines. Specifically, the study investigated the emotional, social, and practical challenges experienced by parents, as well as their coping mechanisms and insights gained through caregiving. A qualitative research design utilizing a multiple case study approach was employed to obtain an in-depth understanding of parental experiences within their natural contexts. Purposive sampling was used to select five parents who possessed direct caregiving experience with children diagnosed with special educational needs. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews and analyzed using Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis framework, complemented by cross-case analysis to identify common patterns and contextual differences among participants. The findings revealed that parents experienced significant challenges associated with behavioral management, developmental delays, social stigma, inclusion efforts, and financial concerns. Emotional experiences were characterized by silent emotional pain, psychological exhaustion, and persistent uncertainty regarding their children's future. Despite these challenges, parents demonstrated resilience through family bonding, spirituality, adaptive parenting practices, and strong support systems. Emergent themes highlighted the importance of acceptance, parental support, awareness, and early intervention in promoting effective caregiving and family well-being. The findings further emphasized that family resilience is strengthened through collaborative support networks, inclusive educational practices, and culturally grounded coping mechanisms. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on special needs parenting by providing context-specific insights into the experiences of Filipino parents raising children with SEN. The findings offer important implications for educational policy, inclusive practices, family-centered interventions, and community support programs aimed at enhancing the quality of life and educational outcomes of children with special educational needs and their families.
