Male Pre-Service Teachers in Early Childhood Education: Motivations and Challenges

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the motivations and challenges of Male Pre-Service Teachers in Early Childhood Education Program in Western Mindanao State University. The researchers conducted a one-on-one interview with five (5) Male Pre-Service Teachers. The findings of this study shed light on the motivations and challenges faced by Male Pre-Service Teachers in Early Childhood Education Program. Participants articulated various reasons for the motivations enrolling in the program such as influence by family, building self-reliance, and a passion for teaching young children for lifelong learning. Despite initial reservations, many participants found fulfillment in their roles as educators. However, the Pre-Service Teachers also encountered unique challenges, such as gender stereotypes and classroom management, which the Pre-Service Teacher navigated with perseverance and support. This study recommends that Male Pre-Service Teachers to actively engage in mentorship programs and seek support from peers, mentors, and family members. Foster a gender-inclusive environment in early childhood education to combat biases and stereotypes, promoting the value of male educators.
