Abstract

This study aimed to examine the level of students’ knowledge in the use of slang and their understanding of grammar and formal structures in the Filipino language. The research is anchored in the Innative Theory proposed by Noam Chomsky (1957), which emphasizes that language acquisition is an inherent ability of individuals. The respondents of this study consisted of a total of 226 students. A descriptive-correlational research design was employed to analyze the relationship between the variables. The gathered data were presented and analyzed using the mean to determine the average level of knowledge in each variable and overall. The findings revealed that students have a very high level of knowledge in the use of slang. However, it was also discovered that their level of knowledge in formal language is very low. This indicates an imbalance in students’ linguistic competence, particularly in their ability to use appropriate formal structures in academic and formal contexts. In response to the findings of the study, the researcher proposes the development of an intervention material. Through this intervention, the study aims to help students improve their understanding and application of formal language while still acknowledging the role of slang in everyday communication. Ultimately, this approach seeks to preserve the integrity of the Filipino language and enhance students’ readiness for higher levels of learning and active participation in the society to which they belong.
