Provocations of Home Economics Teachers in Distance Learning: A Nostalgia

Abstract

This study was intended to explore the experiences, insights, and perceptions about the provocations of home economics teachers in distance learning in the Division of Davao del Sur for school year 2022-2023. The study employed qualitative research design and utilized the phenomenological approach. Interview guide protocols with open ended questions were used to assemble responses of the ten key informants in an in-depth interview. Conversations were recorded via paper and pen, video, and audio, which were then transcribed and translated. The data were carefully analyzed through thematic analysis procedure. The results revealed that the challenges of home economics teachers in distance learning are, focused on work, difficulty in module retrieval, students’ insufficient knowledge, poor internet connections and lack of motivation among teachers. This means that teachers also need assistance, care and understanding in this time of distance learning. In addition, regarding the home economics teachers coping mechanisms, there were three (3) emerging themes created, the inno-beat (innovates), Moni-volve (Money involve) and Moni-Comms (Monitoring and Communication). These themes proved that in the process of distance learning teachers, especially home economics teachers extend their efforts to provide the necessary knowledge to the students. Moreover, the participants suggested that giving appropriate intervention and feedbacks to the students’ performance is vital. Consistent motivation and encouragement not only for students but also for all the teachers may be done providing series of training and values enhancement among teachers and regular monitoring and assessment to all teachers for the basis of proper recognition of efforts and works may be carried out. Establish a safety and conducive working environments among teachers for an effective professional may also be considered.
