Abstract

The school reading instructions played a crucial role in the home reading practices of the students. This study explored mixed-method explanatory sequential, pre- and post-test results of the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (Phil-IRI) and utilized the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test to find out significant differences. The researcher also conducted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with teachers and students to find out their perceptions on the effectiveness of school reading instructions. The results revealed improvement in the reading levels and comprehension of the students after the reading instructions were implemented; however, it did not reach statistical significance. Qualitative data disclosed that the teachers used effective strategies to strengthen home reading practices; however, challenges persisted. Overall, the study recommends the School-Community Partnership Model to promote active parental involvement and strong community support to strengthen the students’ literacy development beyond school.
