Abstract
Education plays a vital role in preparing students for their academic journey by developing their academic foundation, technical competencies, and life skills. In the Philippines, the education system follows the K–12 program, which includes two additional years of Senior High School offering the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum. This curriculum provides rigorous training in Mathematics, Science, and research skills that are essential for tertiary education and related careers. Although perceptions toward the STEM curriculum are generally positive, its effectiveness in preparing SHS graduates for their chosen college courses remains uncertain. This study aimed to determine the level of perceived effectiveness of the STEM curriculum and identify significant differences when grouped according to department, family income, and type of school graduated from. This descriptive-comparative study utilized both quantitative and qualitative methods. The quantitative part used a four-point Likert scale, while thematic analysis was employed for the qualitative responses. ANOVA and an independent t-test were used to analyze the data gathered from 101 STEM graduates of Saint Mary’s University. Findings revealed that the respondents perceived the STEM curriculum to be effective in preparing them for college. Results also showed that perceptions on STEM effectiveness were not affected when grouped according to family income, department, and the type of Senior High School graduated from. Thematic analysis, however, highlighted the need for curriculum enhancement, hands-on learning, improved laboratory facilities, and better teaching strategies. Overall, the study underscores the importance of aligning the STEM curriculum more closely with the demands of higher education. The researchers recommend sustaining and improving the best practices in STEM implementation and using the findings as a basis for career campaign material for students who are undecided about their SHS curriculum.
