Abstract
This qualitative research explored the transformative journey of XB Gensan, a street dance crew from General Santos City, Philippines, as they rose from obscurity to international fame. The study aimed to uncover the untold stories behind their success, focusing on their experiences, challenges, motivations, and the influence of community support. Using a transcendental phenomenological design, the researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with seven members of the dance troupe. Participants were selected based on their direct involvement with the group and willingness to share their personal stories. Thematic analysis revealed five overarching themes: (1) passion and perseverance in dance; (2) overcoming financial and emotional obstacles; (3) growth through teamwork and leadership; (4) the transformative power of community support; and (5) the cultural significance of street dance as an expression of Filipino identity. Verbatim participant quotes supported the emergence of these themes, grounding the findings in lived experiences. The study concluded that XB Gensan’s journey is a powerful narrative of resilience, artistic commitment, and the catalytic role of social networks. It emphasized the need for sustained support for local dance groups through education, policy, and community initiatives. The research contributes to cultural and educational discourse by validating street dance as both a legitimate art form and a tool for youth empowerment and national pride. Future research is recommended to examine how street dance influence’s identity formation, mental well-being, and community engagement in diverse Philippine settings.
