Abstract

This study aimed to determine the relationship between the impact of broken families among pupils and their academic achievement in Araling Panlipunan. This study used a descriptive-correlational type of research, was conducted in Damulog South District, whose respondents were the pupils enrolled in said district, used purposive sampling and used a researcher-made questionnaire with a Cronbach’s Alpha of .915. This study concluded that the pupils from broken homes in Damuog District have parents who earn a minimum income per month, have been married for 3 - 5 years already, mostly work as drivers and have a high school level of education. Generally, there was a very high impact of broken families on pupils in their Social Aspect, Emotional Aspect High Impact, Intellectual Capacity High Impact, Psychological Aspect Very High Impact, Physical Development, and Focus and Attention Skills. The academic achievement of pupils was Outstanding. There was a significant relationship between the impact of broken family and pupils’ academic achievement in Araling Panlipunan and the Social Aspect, Emotional Aspect, Intellectual Capacity, Psychological Aspect, Physical Development, and Focus and Attention Skills. The academic achievement of the pupils is influenced by the Parents’ Monthly income, Number of years separated, and Intellectual Capacity. This study recommends that the parents may be responsible enough to save their relationship with their spouse so that the number of broken homes may be lessened, if not avoided at all. The teachers, as second parents to pupils from broken families, may give the needed attention, care, and support to the said pupils. The pupils must be responsible enough to take care of their studies so that even if the marriage of their parents can no longer be saved, at least their academic achievement is sustained as Outstanding. The school heads may initiate programs, activities, and projects that can still help the pupils maintain their optimum development in school. The parents may take note of their monthly income, number of years separated, and intellectual capacity of the child because these directly influence the academic achievement of the pupils.
