Abstract
This phenomenological qualitative study explored the perceptions, experiences, challenges, coping mechanisms, and recommendations of five Bachelor of Science in Office Administration (BSOA) graduates working as virtual assistants (VAs) in the freelance market in Davao de Oro, Philippines. Conducted in November 2025, the research utilized in-depth interviews to examine how BSOA training prepared graduates for virtual assistant roles and how they navigate the demands of freelance work. The findings revealed that BSOA graduates perceived their training as helpful, particularly in productivity tools (Microsoft and Google Applications), time management, and communication skills. However, participants identified areas needing improvement, including bridging the gap between theory and practice, enhancing computer skills, and strengthening digital competencies. Graduates’ experiences in freelancing were characterized by flexibility, remote work opportunities, higher earning potential, and the need for resourcefulness, though many faced challenges such as unstable internet connectivity, irregular income, time zone differences, communication barriers, and burnout. To address these challenges, participants employed various coping mechanisms including proactive planning, continuous learning, maintaining professionalism, and prioritizing mental and physical well-being. These strategies helped them maintain work-life balance, boost motivation, and uphold accountability in their remote work environments. The study found that VA work significantly contributed to both professional growth (enhanced digital skills, time consciousness, improved communication) and personal development (financial independence, work-life balance, resourcefulness). Participants recommended that aspiring BSOA VAs should focus on mastering technological tools, developing computer-related skills, conducting thorough research about the industry, maintaining work responsibility, and building resilience to face setbacks. The study’s implications suggest that BSOA programs should modernize their curriculum to include updated digital tools training, practical hands-on activities, real-world simulations, and support systems for stress management and career guidance.
