Abstract

This study examined the relationship between tourism industry growth and business operational success in Eastern Samar, Philippines, while identifying key factors that motivate business owners to invest in tourism-related enterprises. Using a quantitative descriptive-correlational research design, the study involved 291 business owners engaged in the tourism industry. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the study variables, while Pearson’s product-moment correlation coefficient was employed to determine the relationship between tourism industry growth and business operational success. Findings revealed a statistically significant but weak positive relationship between tourism industry growth and business operational success (r = .199, p = .024), indicating that although the variables were positively associated, the magnitude of their relationship was limited. The findings further identified several important investment motivators, including opportunities to contribute to local economic and community development, the natural beauty and cultural significance of Eastern Samar, perceived market potential, and supportive local communities. The results suggest that tourism industry growth may provide a favorable environment for tourism-related businesses; however, it should not be considered a strong or independent determinant of business operational success. The study recommends strengthening natural and cultural resource management, tourism infrastructure, promotional initiatives, business incentives, public-private partnerships, and capacity-building programs for local enterprises. These initiatives may contribute to sustainable tourism development while creating a more supportive environment for tourism-related businesses in Eastern Samar.
