Abstract

This study explored the lived experiences of teachers married to fellow teachers, focusing on the challenges they encountered, the coping strategies they employed, and the insights they developed while balancing their personal and professional roles. Using a qualitative narrative inquiry design, the study sought to understand how shared professional identities influenced marital relationships and career experiences within the Philippine public school context. Five public elementary school teachers from Romana C. Acharon Central Elementary School in General Santos City were purposively selected based on predetermined inclusion criteria. Data were gathered through semi-structured individual interviews and a focus group discussion, then analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to identify recurrent meanings and themes. The findings revealed four major challenges experienced by teacher couples: emotional strain, conflict in career goals, professional rivalry, and time management difficulties. Despite these challenges, participants demonstrated resilience by adopting adaptive coping strategies, including open communication, flexibility in professional roles, strategic collaboration, and mutual emotional and professional support. Their narratives further highlighted that shared professional experiences fostered collaboration, strengthened mutual respect, promoted collective achievement, and reinforced supportive partnerships that enhanced both marital satisfaction and professional fulfillment. These findings suggest that the successful integration of marital and occupational roles depends largely on effective communication, shared decision-making, and reciprocal support rather than professional similarity alone. The study contributes to the literature on dual-career marriages by providing context-specific evidence from Philippine public schools and highlighting the intersection of teacher well-being, work–life integration, and professional collaboration. The findings have practical implications for educational leadership by emphasizing the need for institutional policies and teacher support programs that promote psychosocial well-being, collaborative workplace cultures, and healthy work–family balance. Future studies may extend this inquiry across diverse educational settings using broader qualitative or mixed-methods approaches to strengthen the transferability of these findings.
