Conceptual Understanding and Academic Performance of Students in Mathematics

Abstract

A high level of conceptual understanding in Mathematics can influence higher academic performance. In fact, several studies have been published to support such a claim. Hence, this study was conducted to determine the level of conceptual understanding of the students and their academic performance as a basis in designing a bridging program outline for senior high school.  This study utilized a descriptive survey and correlational research design. The respondents were the grade ten students of Kidapawan City National High School who were planning to take Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics strand for senior high school. A researcher-made test consisted of 50-item multiple choices covering topics in Mathematics 10 was used to determine the level of conceptual understanding of students in Mathematics administered to one hundred eighty grade 10 students. The results revealed that the level of conceptual understanding of students is very low. Moreover, it was revealed that their academic performance is poor. Finally, it was revealed that there is a significant relationship between the level of conceptual understanding and academic performance.
