Abstract

This study examines the relationship between Grade 9 learners’ level of awareness and their writing performance in reflective writing at Datu Mamundas Mamalumpong Integrated School for the school year 2024–2025 and developed a mathematics journaling writeshop aligned with Grade 9 competencies. Using a research and development (R&D) design with descriptive and correlational methods, the study assessed learners’ awareness and performance across all areas. Results show that learners had moderately high awareness of organization and sentence structure, and high awareness of usage. Their writing performance was consistently high across all areas. Correlation analysis reveals a moderate positive relationship between awareness and writing performance, indicating that learners who understood the principles of reflective writing were better able to express their mathematical thinking clearly and effectively. Based on these findings, a mathematics journaling writeshop was developed and validated by experts, with very high ratings in acceptability, appropriateness, content, relevance, and usability. The study concludes that reflective writing strengthens mathematical learning by organizing ideas and deepening understanding. It recommends journaling in instruction, teacher collaboration, and regular learner practice, with future research exploring its wider impact.
