Abstract

This study seeks to analyze the phonetic features of the Maguindanaon language, specifically on the vowel sounds. Using the qualitative approach and phonetic analysis, data about the vowel sounds of this language are elicited. Language data are used to analyze the features, and native Maguindanaon speakers are tapped for the data collection. It is found out that there are three front vowel sounds: /a/, /i/, and /ɪ/; two central vowel sounds: /ǝ/ and /^/; and three back vowel sounds: /u/, /Ʊ/, and /Ɔ/. Also, diphthongs such as /aɪ/, /oɪ/, and /aƱ/ are also present. It is recommended that more studies centering on Philippine indigenous languages, specifically those present in Davao Region, be conducted in the future.
