Abstract
This study examined Grade 12 students' perceptions of qualitative research to understand their engagement and challenges. Conducted at Mindanao State University - Maigo School of Arts and Trades (MSU-MSAT) during the School Year 2024-2025, the research utilized a mixed-method (quali-quanti) approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative methodologies to capture a comprehensive perspective. A validated survey questionnaire was employed, divided into two parts: a four-point Likert scale to measure familiarity and perceptions, and open-ended questions for qualitative insights. Twenty-five senior high school students participated, selected through purposive sampling to ensure accurate representation. Thematic analysis was used to interpret qualitative data effectively. Findings indicated that students, mostly female, viewed qualitative research as a tool to explore meanings and human experiences. They found it engaging but challenging due to difficulties in research skills such as time management, self-discipline, data collection, analysis, and sampling procedures. Other challenges included critical thinking, grammar, vocabulary, and participant cooperation. Students expressed the need for training in information gathering, experiential learning, and skill development. They recognized the value of qualitative research in problem-solving, critical thinking, and understanding real-world issues. The study concluded that while qualitative research is demanding, it remains a valuable academic and practical tool. It recommended implementing a comprehensive support program, including mentorship and professional development for teachers, to enhance students' research capabilities.
