Abstract
The study explored the grit and motivational factors as well as the underlying contextual factors among 15 selected working Filipino professionals using Interpretative Phenomenological Approach. The interviewed professionals are gritty individuals who have successfully built their careers. Analysis yielded three main themes of grit: a) consistency of interests, b) perseverance of effort and c) adaptability to situations. In connection to grit, motivational factors that drive professionals are job-related, social relevance, familial, and learning and development. It was also found that contextual variables, particularly culture, play a major role in the life decisions of these professionals. These factors are intrapersonal, interpersonal and societal in nature. Despite the challenges brought about by the contextual variables, the professionals continue to display grit. Based on the conclusions and limitations of this study, recommendations were made to the selected Filipino professionals, Human Resource practitioners, and to future researchers.
