Abstract

The study titled "Coping Mechanisms of Students with Broken Families in a Public Institution in Gumaca" utilized a mixed-methods design to examine how students from broken families cope with stress, anxiety, and adversity. A total of forty junior high school students were selected as participants, with data primarily collected through a survey questionnaire. The findings indicate that 53% of the respondents are female, showing that the majority are women. Most participants fall within the age range of 14 to 17 years, with a large proportion enrolled in Grade 9. The data suggest that many students recognize and utilize various coping strategies to manage stress, anxiety, and adversity. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis H-test revealed that the null hypotheses for age and sex were accepted, implying no significant differences in coping mechanisms across these variables. However, the null hypothesis for grade level was rejected, indicating a significant variation in coping mechanisms among students based on their grade. Additionally, Children who come from broken homes often face considerable obstacles in their education. The absence of a stable home life, adequate guidance, and emotional care means that many of their basic needs go unfulfilled. To thrive in daily life, they need consistent moral and financial support. Without these, their ability to perform well academically is severely impacted.
