Abstract

This study explores how family carers use comforting language and communication strategies to ease the emotional burdens of cancer patients, revealing that healing extends beyond treatment and resides deeply in human connection. Employing a phenomenological research design, 15 family carers were asked to participate in unveiling the comforting words and the communication strategies they used in caring for their cancer patients. Results revealed that the comforting language used by family carers toward cancer patients centers on nurturing patient–carer relationships as verbal comfort, as well as verbal hope and resilience. Additionally, regarding the communication strategies that family carers give to the cancer patients, mastering therapeutic communication, building strong patient-carer relationships, and fostering patient empowerment and well-being emerged as the core themes. Finally, the insights that the participants can share with co-carers are promoting emotional support, building resilient communities, and compassionate presence and practical support. The results further have important implications for family carers who are involved in cancer care. In the journey of cancer care, words transcend their ordinary function. They become instruments of comfort, empathy, and strength both to the family carers and their cancer patients.
