Abstract

This study examined the relationship between perceived parenting styles and grit among Filipino adolescents using a descriptive-correlational design. The study determined the perceived level of the four parenting styles: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful, and their influence on the two dimensions of grit, the perseverance of effort and consistency of interest. Filipino adolescents viewed their parents as authoritative, rating this style highest, while the other styles received lower ratings. Respondents showed high levels of both perseverance of effort and consistency of interest, indicating a persistent and resilient disposition. Authoritative parenting was positively and significantly associated with perseverance of effort, suggesting that a warm, structured parenting approach supports sustained effort among adolescents. In contrast, authoritarian, neglectful, and permissive styles were significantly correlated with consistency of interest. These findings highlight the important role of parenting style in forming grit among Filipino adolescents.
