Positive Self-Concept: Basis for Development of Teachers’ Self-Esteem

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the level of self-esteem and the strategies used by teachers in developing self-concept. Specifically, the study answered the questions on the demographic profile of teachers in terms of age, gender, civil status, monthly family income, in terms of educational background,  educational qualification, experience in teaching, on the level of self-esteem of the teacher; on the significant relationship in the level of self-esteem when teachers were grouped according to their profile; and on the strategies that the teachers used in developing their positive self-concept: attribution, social comparison, impression management, planned behavior, and family relation. The study was descriptive-correlational research.  It employed 50 teachers from the elementary schools in East 1 District, Iligan City, Lanao Del Norte, in the school year 2020-2021. The statistical tools used in analyzing data were frequency count, percentage, mean ANOVA, and T-test. The typical elementary teachers of East 1 District, elementary were at the age of 31-35 years old, female, and single; they earned twenty thousand and more a month with MA units and had been teaching for six to ten years.  They had training in self-concept development. The teachers had very high self-esteem. This could be the result of their training.
