Abstract

This study investigates the instructional strategies used by Araling Panlipunan teachers to enhance their language competence, focusing on the impact of collaborative learning, inquiry-based learning, and differentiated instruction on essential language skills such as vocabulary proficiency, reading comprehension, oral and written communication, and listening skills. Recognizing the vital role of effective language competence in teaching complex social, historical, and cultural concepts, the research explores how these strategies foster teachers' abilities to engage students meaningfully in Social Studies content. This study addresses a research gap by examining the intersection of language-focused instructional strategies with content-based teaching, particularly within the Philippine educational context. A descriptive-correlational research design was employed to examine the relationship between instructional strategies and language competence. Data were collected through a self-made questionnaire administered to Araling Panlipunan teachers from District 8 of the Schools Division of Valencia City, specifically those teaching Grades 4, 5, and 6. A census sampling method was used, involving all eligible teachers in the district. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, T-tests, and ANOVA to evaluate the level of each instructional strategy and its association with various language competencies. The findings demonstrated a statistically significant relationship between instructional strategies and language competence, with differentiated instruction showing a stronger impact on language skills than collaborative or inquiry-based methods. The study concludes that differentiated instruction is particularly effective in enhancing language competencies among Araling Panlipunan teachers, as it allows educators to tailor their approach to diverse student needs and language levels. Based on these findings, the study recommends incorporating targeted professional development programs that emphasize differentiated instruction, providing teachers with the skills to support language development in Social Studies. This research contributes to the broader educational discourse on integrating language-focused instructional strategies in content-based teaching, offering insights that may inform curriculum design and teacher training programs.
