Effects of Stress on the Academic Performance of College Students in Gumaca, Quezon

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effects of stress on the academic performance of college students in Eastern Quezon College in Gumaca, Quezon. It determined the profile of the respondents in terms of Age, Sex, Year level, and Program. It revealed the level of stress on the academic performance of the college students in terms of Academic stress, Social Stress, Financial Stress. The researcher used the descriptive method of research. This study employed a proportionate random sampling design. Under this procedure, the researcher considered using one hundred (100) respondents from the selected College students in Eastern Quezon College in Gumaca, Quezon, to get 100% of the respondents. The findings revealed that most of the respondents are 19-23 years old. The female and male respondents have balanced number of populations. The majority of respondents are 3rd-year students. In terms of Program, most of the respondents are from BSED. In terms of academic stress significantly affects the academic performance of college students. The highest mean score (4.35) indicates that stress notably impairs students' ability to concentrate or focus on academic tasks. It revealed that social stress also plays a significant role in affecting the academic performance of college students. The highest mean score (4.5) indicates that students strongly agree they struggle to balance their social life with academic responsibilities. This highlights the challenge many students face in managing time and priorities, which can lead to academic strain and reduced performance. It indicates that financial stress is a significant factor affecting the academic performance of college students. The highest mean score (4.54) shows a strong agreement among respondents that worrying about covering educational expenses is a major concern. This suggests that financial insecurity can create mental and emotional burdens that may hinder academic focus, motivation, and overall performance.
