Abstract
In PISA 2018, the Philippines ranked 77th out of the 79 countries that participated in the global assessment on reading comprehension, mathematics, and science. The purpose of our research is to determine the challenges and opportunities of senior high school in learning reading and writing subjects. The researchers used focused group discussions and in-depth interviews in analyzing the results of the descriptive qualitative research. We employed thematic analysis to investigate and draw conclusions based on the emerging themes of the participants’ responses in the questionnaire we provided. We have a total number of fourteen (14) participants; seven (7) SHS students participated in our FGD method, while seven (7) SHS students participated in our in-depth interview. The results revealed that the challenges of SHS students include: conflict of beliefs and opinions, teachers’ incompetence, and lack of reading comprehension skills. Furthermore, it was discovered that the opportunities of SHS students cover: open communication, study habits, and developing basic technical skills. It was found out that reading and writing have factors that would lead to the students’ development in their learning process.
