Abstract
This study examined the factors influencing the retention of geographical concepts among Grade 7 students, using a descriptive survey design and researcher-developed checklist questionnaires. Data from 30 students were analyzed using the weighted arithmetic mean. Findings revealed that 17% of students experience difficulty understanding map, symbols and scales. Key factors that significantly contributed to concept retention included engagement in practical and interactive activities (WAM = 3.43), personal interest (WAM = 3.57), a supportive learning environment (WAM = 3.53), and availability of resources (WAM = 3.27). The results suggest the importance of student-centered instructional strategies, effective learning resources, and supportive classroom environments in enhancing students’ retention of geographical concepts. These findings may serve as a basis for improving instructional practices and for future research in geographical education.
