Abstract
The purpose of this multiple-case study under qualitative research was to describe the challenges, coping strategies, and insights of the five female junior and senior high school students who experienced early intimate relationships (ages 13–19) enrolled in Upper Maculan National High School, Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. This study explored how they balanced their studies and personal life. Data were gathered via in-depth, semi-structured interviews, and they were coded as P1- Kim, P2- Deday, P3- Jaz, P4- CS, and P4- Kla. Based on the gathered data, four themes emerged from the category of challenges: Emotional Instability, Psychological Trauma from Abuse, Poor Academic Performance, and Lack of Support and Recourse. Meanwhile, three emergent themes for the coping mechanism were: Establishment of Support System, Gradual Acceptance and Self-Care, and Strengthening Awareness and Listening to Advice. Lastly, for the category of Insights, the six emergent themes were: Relationships must have Limitations, Self-love matters, Understanding Intuitions on Relations, Recognizing the Importance of Collaborative Support, Resulted from Absence of Awareness, Possibility of Healing from the Experience, and Focusing on Goals. Findings showed that all female student participants similarly experienced some emerging themes, while other themes were specific to individual participants. Future research could explore the generalizability of these findings to a larger, more diverse sample of female adolescents who have experienced early intimate relationships across different geographical locations and school contexts to validate the identified themes.
