Abstract

This study aimed to determine the impacts of oral communication and social skills in promoting the local history of Gumaca, Quezon. It determined the profile of the respondents in terms of age and sex. It investigated the impacts of oral communication and social skills in promoting local history in terms of the effectiveness of oral communication, the quality of social interaction, and the context in which history is shared. The researcher used a descriptive method of research. This study employed a purposive sampling design. Under this procedure, the researcher considered using forty (40) selected Social Studies teachers in Gumaca, Quezon, to get 100% of the respondents. This study determined that most of the respondents are aged 45 years old and above, which accounts for 35% of the total respondents. It revealed that the majority of the respondents are females, who account for 60% of the total respondents. This study revealed a grand mean of 4.64, interpreted as “Strongly Agree.” This indicates that the respondents strongly agreed that oral communication is highly effective in promoting local history. The indicator with the highest mean, 4.75, states that oral communication makes information about Gumaca’s local history easier to understand, while the lowest mean, 4.47, corresponds to the indicator “It builds unity among the people of Gumaca.” The respondents strongly agree that cooperative discussions build a stronger appreciation of Gumaca’s historical identity, as reflected by the highest mean of 4.52. Meanwhile, they also strongly agreed, to a slightly lesser extent, that historical learning becomes more engaging and enjoyable through social interaction, which obtained the lowest mean of 4.37. According to the result of the Kruskal-Wallis H-Test, the null hypothesis of age is rejected. In contrast, the null hypothesis of sex is accepted, which means that there is no significance difference in the perceived impacts of oral communication and social skills in promoting the local history of Gumaca, Quezon, in terms of the respondent’s sex. However, there is a significant difference in terms of age. From the results of this study, the following were recommended: Local Government Units (LGUs) may give the LGU evidence-based insights into how communication and social interaction affect the delivery of historical narratives. Community Members of Gumaca may raise awareness among residents about their role as informal promoters of local history. Educators and Schools may provide teachers, especially in Araling Panlipunan and related subjects, with strategies to improve classroom approaches to teaching local history. Tourism Officers and Cultural Advocates may help tourism personnel, heritage site staff, and cultural volunteers identify techniques to enhance audience engagement. Future Researchers may use this study as a valuable reference for future researchers on topics related to communication, heritage promotion, or community-based tourism.
