Abstract
This study examined the role of the Philippine Politics and Governance subject in the development of leadership skills among student leaders in a higher education institution in Sariaya, Quezon. A descriptive-comparative research design was employed, utilizing a self-structured questionnaire administered to purposively selected student leaders who had completed the subject. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize respondents’ demographic profiles and perceptions, while inferential statistics, specifically the independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA, were applied to determine differences in perceptions when grouped according to age, sex, socioeconomic status, leadership experience, and participation in leadership programs. Findings revealed that exposure to the subject positively influenced leadership skills, particularly in enhancing understanding of governance, promoting civic responsibility, and fostering ethical decision-making. Results further showed no significant differences in perceptions across the identified demographic variables, indicating that the subject’s impact on leadership development was consistent among diverse student leaders. The study emphasized the importance of political education in higher education as a means of preparing students for leadership roles in society. It concluded that the Philippine Politics and Governance subject plays a vital role in nurturing ethical, socially responsible, and politically aware youth leaders and recommended strengthening political education and leadership development initiatives within academic institutions.
