Abstract

This study explores the underlying factors influencing vaping behavior and cessation among junior high school students at St. Mary’s Academy of Nagcarlan, Laguna. Utilizing a qualitative case study design, the research analyzed narrative testimonies of former student vapers to examine the social, psychological, and environmental dimensions of vaping. Data were collected through anecdotal records and reflective accounts obtained from school-based interventions and analyzed using thematic analysis. Findings revealed three primary motivations for vaping initiation: peer pressure, curiosity and experimentation, and emotional coping with stress. Peer influence emerged as a dominant factor, with students reporting pressure to conform to group norms to maintain social belonging. Curiosity, often fueled by flavored products and peer demonstrations, further encouraged initial use. Additionally, vaping was frequently used as a maladaptive coping mechanism for stress related to academic demands, family issues, and social challenges. Cessation was primarily motivated by health concerns, including respiratory issues, as well as family influence and school-based disciplinary and counseling interventions. The results highlight the effectiveness of integrated approaches combining positive discipline, guidance, support, and parental involvement in facilitating behavioral change. The study underscores the importance of addressing vaping as both a behavioral and mental health issue. It recommends the implementation of student-centered, narrative-based interventions that leverage peer testimonies, strengthen family engagement, and promote supportive school environments. These findings contribute to the development of contextually relevant strategies for preventing and reducing adolescent vaping.
