Abstract

This study examined the challenges encountered by Grade 8 Araling Panlipunan teachers and the coping strategies they employ to address these difficulties, with the aim of developing an intervention program to enhance instructional practices. Using a qualitative descriptive research design, the study explored the lived experiences of eight (8) teachers from Maltana National High School selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews conducted between March and April 2025 and were analyzed using thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s framework. Findings revealed four major categories of challenges: inadequacy of educational resources, pedagogical challenges, technological challenges, and limited professional development opportunities. Teachers reported difficulties related to outdated and insufficient instructional materials, low student engagement, limited use of innovative teaching strategies, and constraints in integrating technology due to inadequate infrastructure and training. These challenges collectively hinder effective teaching and reduce students’ interest and participation in the subject. In response, teachers demonstrated adaptive coping strategies, including the use of student-centered and differentiated instruction, development of localized and contextualized materials, integration of available technology, and active pursuit of professional growth. These strategies reflect teachers’ resilience and commitment to improving the quality of instruction despite existing limitations. Based on the findings, the study proposed Project HEART (Holistic Enhancement and Advancement for Responsive Teaching in Araling Panlipunan), an intervention program designed to address identified challenges through targeted support in resources, training, and instructional innovation. The study underscores the need for sustained institutional support to strengthen teaching effectiveness, promote student engagement, and enhance learning outcomes in Araling Panlipunan.
