Herbal Heroes: A 2D RPG Adventure Discovering Laguna’s Medicinal Plants Through Game-Based Learning

Abstract

Traditional medicinal plant knowledge is an important part of Laguna, Philippines' cultural heritage, but it is fading among younger generations due to modernization. Many youths today no longer recognize common medicinal plants or know how to prepare and use them, and existing efforts to pass on this knowledge have not been enough to close that gap. This study aimed to develop Herbal Heroes: A 2D RPG Adventure Discovering Laguna's Medicinal Plants Through Game-Based Learning, an educational game designed to preserve and discover this knowledge through an engaging, interactive format. Using developmental and descriptive research methods and following the Game Development Life Cycle (GDLC), the study produced a 2D role-playing game in which players explore villages and natural areas, complete tasks, and interact with characters modeled on local herbal healers. Through gameplay, players learn the preparation methods, health benefits, and cultural significance of ten medicinal plants commonly used in Laguna: Akapulko, Ampalaya, Bawang, Bayabas, Lagundi, Niyog-Niyogan, Sambong, Tsaang Gubat, Ulasimang Bato, and Yerba Buena. The game was evaluated by third-year Crop Science students using the System Usability Scale (SUS) and post-game feedback. Results showed that Herbal Heroes has a user-friendly interface and effectively engages players while teaching herbal medicine content. These findings suggest that game-based learning is a powerful tool for teaching science, discovering cultural awareness, and encouraging environmental appreciation among younger learners.
