Abstract
Tool mastery is a fundamental competency in aircraft maintenance, directly influencing operational efficiency, maintenance quality, and workplace safety. However, limited empirical research has examined its effects within aviation maintenance education. This study investigated the effects of tool mastery on the efficiency and safety of maintenance operations among Aircraft Maintenance Technology (AMT) students and laboratory instructors at Indiana Aerospace University during the Academic Year 2025–2026. Specifically, it examined respondents' perceptions of tool mastery in terms of maintenance tasks, safety, and maintenance efficiency, while identifying the common challenges encountered during laboratory activities. A convergent mixed-methods research design was employed, integrating quantitative and qualitative approaches. The study involved 100 purposively selected participants, comprising 90 second-year AMT students and 10 laboratory instructors. Quantitative data were collected through a researcher-developed five-point Likert-scale questionnaire, while qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews. Descriptive statistics, including frequency, percentage, weighted mean, and standard deviation, were used to analyze the quantitative data, whereas thematic analysis was employed to interpret the qualitative findings. Results revealed that both students and instructors strongly agreed that tool mastery significantly enhances maintenance task performance, operational safety, and maintenance efficiency. Conversely, inadequate tool proficiency was associated with reduced confidence, maintenance delays, procedural errors, improper tool handling, and increased safety risks. Interview findings further emphasized the importance of continuous hands-on training, competency-based instruction, mentorship, standardized operating procedures, and effective tool management systems in strengthening practical competence. The study concludes that improving tool mastery is essential for developing competent, efficient, and safety-conscious aviation maintenance professionals. The findings provide valuable implications for curriculum enhancement, laboratory instruction, and competency-based training programs in aviation maintenance education.
