Abstract

This study, titled “Problems and Issues Encountered by Mountain Province State Polytechnic College Students Majoring in Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE),” aimed to determine the problems encountered by students and the issues affecting their academic performance. Specifically, the study examined factors related to the educational system, school administration, teachers, and students, as well as the coping mechanisms or solutions employed by students in addressing these problems while undertaking TLE as a course. A mixed-method research design was utilized, and the study was conducted during the first semester of Academic Year 2018–2019. The respondents included TLE students, faculty members teaching TLE subjects, and school administrators. Findings revealed that the college lacked adequate TLE laboratory materials, such as tools and machines for carpentry, plumbing, electronics, and cosmetology. In addition, there was a shortage of laboratory rooms and workshop areas for cosmetology, carpentry, masonry, and plumbing. Teacher-related factors, including perceived laziness, favoritism, lack of approachability, and concerns regarding teachers’ qualifications, were found to affect students’ academic performance. Student-related factors, particularly learner laziness, were also identified as contributing to academic difficulties. Despite these challenges, the respondents identified several plausible coping mechanisms to address the issues encountered. Based on the findings, the study recommends the procurement of adequate equipment, facilities, classrooms, and laboratories. School administrators are encouraged to regularly assess instructional needs and identify strategies to address resource gaps. Furthermore, professional development and training on effective teaching strategies should be provided to teachers handling TLE subjects. Students are also encouraged to recognize and fulfill their responsibilities as learners. Lastly, collaborative efforts among school administrators, curriculum designers, teachers, and students are essential to minimize issues affecting the effective delivery of TLE instruction.
