Abstract
This study examined the role of disaster preparedness activities on learners’ engagement in social studies within the District VII Schools Division of Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, Philippines. The research explored the role of disaster preparedness activities on learners’ engagement in Social Studies amid the growing need for disaster education in schools. Recognizing the increasing frequency of natural and human-made disasters, the study explored how drills, simulations, emergency response training, and risk assessment exercises enhance students’ cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement. Grounded in Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, the study posits that experiential, hands-on activities allow learners to connect Social Studies concepts with real-world situations, thereby strengthening participation and motivation. Employing a descriptive-correlational design, the research gathered data from elementary teachers in District VII, Schools Division of Malaybalay City, involving 113 teacher respondents selected via purposive sampling. Quantitative data were gathered through validated questionnaires utilizing a 5-point Likert scale and analyzed to evaluate teachers’ perception of learners’ engagement. Findings revealed that disaster preparedness activities were implemented at a moderate to high level and significantly contributed to improved learners’ engagement. Teachers observed increases in critical thinking, active participation, emotional involvement, and knowledge retention when disaster-related activities were integrated into Social Studies lessons. Statistical analysis confirmed a significant relationship between disaster preparedness activities and teachers’ perceptions of learners’ engagement. The study concludes that incorporating disaster preparedness into Social Studies is an effective instructional strategy that promotes deeper learning and civic responsibility. It recommends strengthening experiential learning approaches and enhancing disaster-related instructional practices to further improve engagement and resilience among learners.
