Abstract

This study aimed to determine the impact of classroom activities in enhancing students' public speaking skills in a private Institution in Gumaca, Quezon. This study revealed the impact of classroom activities such as debate and role play in enhancing the public speaking skills of senior high school students. The researcher used a mixed method of research design. This study employed a quota sampling design for selecting one hundred (100) respondents to answer the survey questionnaire, while using a random sampling design to select the six (6) to undergo structure interview. The findings from the qualitative data revealed that role play, with a mean of 3.70, is a more effective way of enhancing public speaking skills in terms of using body language, while respondents also agreed that debate, with a mean of 3.64, is also helpful in enhancing the skills. Based on the results of the Mann-Whitney U test, the null hypothesis is not rejected, which means there is no significant difference in the perceived impact across different types of classroom activities. Meanwhile, the findings from the quantitative data revealed that body language plays an important role in public speeches. According to the responses, classroom activities such as debate and role-play influenced their use of body language, such as gestures, postures, making eye contact, expressiveness and overall confidence. The recommendations of the researcher may help the following: For the School Administrator, they may conduct activities or seminars related to debate and role-playing for the learners to participate in, which can enhance public speaking skills. To the Parents, they may monitor their children in using the mentioned classroom activities to train themselves and be able to apply them in the classroom. To the Teachers, they may provide tasks that will involve the learners in debating and role-playing in order for the learners to feel more comfortable and confident, which would help in enhancing their public speaking skills. To the Students, they may do some practices involving debating and role playing. They may look for different topics for debate and a variety of roles for role play which can be seen on television or the internet. To the Future Researchers, they may conduct a parallel study that gives more highlight on classroom activities used in enhancing the public speaking skills of senior high school students.
