Reference Checker

Paste up to 25 references, one per line. Each one is looked up in Crossref and OpenAlex: is there a matching record, was it retracted or corrected, do its title, author and year agree with yours, and does its DOI resolve?

How each reference is checked

  • Found: Crossref (searched with your whole reference) or OpenAlex holds a record with at least 90% of its title words in your reference. We re-score every candidate on title, author and year ourselves.
  • Details differ: the title (under 90% of its words), the author (none of the record's first three family names) or the year (more than one year apart) does not match the record.
  • Retracted, expression of concern or corrected: the record carries that notice in Crossref, which includes Retraction Watch data, or OpenAlex marks it retracted.
  • DOI: when your reference gives a DOI, we check that it resolves at doi.org.
  • Not found in Crossref/OpenAlex does not mean a reference is wrong or invented: books, chapters, theses, reports, laws and many regional journals are not indexed there. Check those by hand.
  • No AI is used: only Crossref, OpenAlex, doi.org and text matching.

Your text is not saved

The references you paste are used for this one run only: we do not store them, and they are gone once the results page is sent. Each reference is sent to Crossref and OpenAlex (and a DOI to doi.org) to be looked up. Their public answers, not your text, are kept for up to 30 days under a one-way fingerprint, so that repeated lookups are fast.

To apply the daily limits we keep a one-way fingerprint of your IP address (for IPv6, of its network part) until the day is over. The web server's ordinary access logs are separate from this tool.
