Bridging the Digital Divide: Technology’s Influence on Student Learning and Academic Achievement

Abstract

The rapid integration of digital technologies into education has transformed teaching and learning practices, yet disparities in access to digital resources continue to create significant educational inequalities. This study examined the influence of the digital divide on student learning and academic achievement among Education students at Indiana Aerospace University. Specifically, it investigated students' experiences with educational technology, student learning, academic achievement, and the digital divide while identifying the primary challenges encountered in technology-assisted learning. A mixed-methods convergent parallel design was employed, involving 100 undergraduate Education students who participated in a structured survey and 10 purposively selected students who took part in semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions. Quantitative data were analyzed using frequency, percentage, weighted mean, standard deviation, and ranking, while qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis and integrated using triangulation. The findings revealed that respondents generally agreed that educational technology positively enhances engagement, learning, and academic achievement. However, unequal access to digital devices, unstable internet connectivity, and varying levels of digital literacy remain barriers to equitable learning opportunities. The most significant challenges identified were technology-related distractions, overreliance on digital tools, poor internet connectivity, and ineffective online collaborative activities. Qualitative findings further emphasized the need to balance technology use with traditional instructional approaches to promote meaningful learning. The study concludes that bridging the digital divide requires equitable access to digital resources, strengthened technological infrastructure, and pedagogically sound technology integration. These findings provide practical implications for educators, university administrators, and policymakers in developing inclusive educational policies and interventions that foster digital equity, enhance student learning, and improve academic achievement in higher education.
