Improving Learners’ Reading Performance through Remote Reading Remediation

Abstract

The high percentage of non-readers of Grade 1 and 2 learners during the early part of school year 2020-2021 that might worsen in the distance learning modality had pushed the researchers to conduct this study. Improving the reading performance of the learners will also impact on their academic performance. The ultimate purpose was to determine the effectiveness of the remote reading remediation in improving the reading performance of Grade 1 and 2 learners of Getafe Central Elementary School SY 2020-2021. Further, the participants were the 21 Grades 1 and 2 learners who were non-readers in the pre-assessment. They were chosen through purposive sampling. The researchers implemented the remote reading remediation composed of online reading remediation, offline video reading remediation and offline audio with printed materials. The reading materials in video, audio and printed formats were prepared by the researchers. The innovation was implemented for eight weeks through the mentioned modalities. Monitoring log was accomplished by the researchers weekly. Post reading assessment was conducted. The score sheet of the post DCEGRAT revealed that 18 out of 21 non-readers in Grades 1 and 2 turned to readers. It has gained 85.71 percent improvement. Although three participants were left non-readers but they have improved from cannot identify letter name and cannot produce letter sounds to syllabic readers. One of the parents cannot read and write. One learner was left to his Grand Mother. Post DCEGRAT was administered through home visitation. Innovation was effective. Availability of gadgets could helped much. Reading materials were appropriate to the participants. It was recommended to use said innovation whenever the school may encounter same circumstances and encourage neighboring schools in the district to replicate said innovation.
