Abstract

This study investigated the effect of Approved Training Organization (ATO) status on the work readiness of third-year Aircraft Maintenance Technology (AMT) students at Indiana Aerospace University during Academic Year 2024–2025. Utilizing a convergent mixed-methods design, quantitative data were gathered from a structured Likert-scale survey administered to 100 students who completed General Familiarization Training Level 1, supplemented by qualitative semi-structured interviews. The findings showed that students held positive perceptions of their training standards (weighted mean = 3.81), ATO certification status (weighted mean = 3.78), and assessment practices (weighted mean = 3.92), noting that these components enhanced training credibility, employability, and technical development. However, the top challenges identified included limited practical exposure to real maintenance tasks (ranked 1st), assessments that inadequately reflected practical competencies (ranked 2nd), and a need to strengthen hands-on technical skills for industry readiness (ranked 3.5). Qualitative insights highlighted a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical execution in authentic maintenance environments. The study concluded that while ATO status provides a essential regulatory and structural framework, certification alone does not guarantee full work readiness. An action plan was proposed to expand hands-on laboratory and hangar exposure, transition toward performance-based competency assessments, update curriculum content to reflect modern maintenance technologies, and strengthen partnerships with aviation industry stakeholders.
