Investigating the Efficacy of AR-Enhanced Interactive Museum Exhibits on Visitor Engagement and Knowledge Retention in Historical Contexts.

Abstract

This study investigated the efficacy of Augmented Reality (AR)-enhanced interactive museum exhibits on visitor engagement and knowledge retention within historical contexts. Traditional museum experiences often struggle with maintaining visitor attention and ensuring deep learning. We hypothesized that integrating AR technology could significantly improve both metrics. A quasi-experimental design was employed at a historical museum, comparing a control group experiencing a traditional exhibit on ancient Roman life with an experimental group utilizing an AR-enhanced version of the same exhibit. Participants (n=120) were randomly assigned to one of two conditions. Engagement was measured through observed dwell time, interaction frequency, and post-visit survey ratings, while knowledge retention was assessed via a post-visit quiz and a delayed recall test. Results indicated that the AR-enhanced exhibit significantly increased visitor engagement, characterized by longer dwell times and higher self-reported interest. Furthermore, the experimental group demonstrated superior knowledge acquisition and retention compared to the control group. These findings suggest that AR holds substantial potential for transforming museum experiences, making historical information more accessible, interactive, and memorable. The study contributes empirical evidence supporting the integration of AR in cultural heritage institutions to foster deeper learning and enhance visitor experience.
