Abstract

This study assessed residents' perceived effectiveness of disaster preparedness in Barangay 34, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, focusing on early warning systems, evacuation planning, availability of emergency supplies, and disaster response and training. Using a quantitative research design, data were collected from 336 residents aged 18 years and above through a structured survey questionnaire. Findings indicated that disaster preparedness was generally perceived as very effective across the identified dimensions. Higher perceptions of effectiveness were reported among older adults, females, married individuals, long-term residents, and respondents with higher educational attainment. In contrast, younger respondents, males, single individuals, shorter-term residents, and those with lower educational attainment tended to provide comparatively lower ratings, although preparedness was still generally perceived as effective. Statistical analysis revealed differences in preparedness perceptions across selected demographic variables, particularly sex, civil status, length of residency, and educational attainment. These findings suggest that while disaster preparedness initiatives in Barangay 34 are generally viewed positively by residents, disparities in perceptions across sectors of the community warrant attention. Strengthening targeted orientation programs, risk communication strategies, community awareness campaigns, and participatory disaster risk reduction activities may help promote more inclusive engagement and confidence among all residents. The study provides practical insights for barangay officials, local government units, disaster risk reduction and management offices, and community stakeholders in enhancing localized disaster preparedness initiatives and community resilience.
