Abstract

This work investigates the urban ideals in the process of elevation of some freguesias to the village in the colonial age, with the case study of freguesias from the term of Sorocaba, elevated in village at the government of Morgado de Mateus (1765-1775): Itapeva da Faxina (1769), Itapetininga (1771) and Apiaí (1771). They were located in the southern part of the Colony, on a commercial route between Sorocaba and Curitiba. The method used includes comparative analysis of urban forms at the foundation of the villages, reconstructing the practices and discourses involved in the elevations with the current historical centers, trying to verify the maintenances and ruptures of the idealized formal models of the city through their built spaces. For this purpose, documents of the São Paulo government of the period were used as primary sources, photographs and software for interpreting historical cartography with the current satellite image resources, spatializing the different configurations of these urban centers, in the past and present.
