Evaluating the Impact of a Web-Based Mindfulness Intervention on Compassion Fatigue and Burnout Among Pediatric Oncology Nurses: A Quasi-Experimental Study

Abstract

Pediatric oncology nursing is a highly demanding specialty that exposes nursing professionals to chronic emotional distress, predisposing them to compassion fatigue (CF) and burnout (BO). This quasi-experimental study evaluated the efficacy of an 8-week, web-based mindfulness intervention ("MindfulNurse") designed to mitigate CF and BO, and to enhance compassion satisfaction (CS) among pediatric oncology nurses. A convenience sample of 74 registered nurses was allocated into an intervention group (n = 38) or a control group (n = 36). The intervention group received access to an asynchronous, web-based mindfulness portal containing weekly 15-minute modules and daily micro-practices, while the control group received standard institutional wellness newsletters. Data were collected at baseline (T0), post-intervention (T1), and at a 3-month follow-up (T2) using the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL-V) scale. Repeated-measures ANOVA demonstrated significant group-by-time interactions, showing substantial reductions in burnout (p < .01) and secondary traumatic stress (p < .05) in the intervention group compared to the control group. Furthermore, compassion satisfaction increased significantly over time for the intervention group (p < .01) and remained stable at the 3-month follow-up. These findings suggest that web-based mindfulness programs offer a flexible, accessible, and highly effective modality to support the psychological resilience of pediatric oncology nurses, presenting a scalable solution for healthcare organizations.
