Abstract
On the 150th anniversary of the abolition of the death penalty in Portugal for civil crimes, this
article studies and publishes a long anonymous poem, probably from the early 18th century, about a failed
hanging in the city of Porto. The author underlines the documentary information provided by the text and
discusses the meaning of its satirical orientation.
