Thesis front matter: student, supervisor, jury, title and abstracts

The front matter is everything before Chapter 1. Each part has its own page in the sidebar of the thesis editor, and the PDF lays them out for you.

  • Student Info – the template ("Thesis Style Based On"), the institute, the main branch (department), the thesis level and the defence date.
  • Supervisor – your supervisor, a co-supervisor if you have one, and the head of department. Choose each from your list of people, or use Click to add if not in the list to add someone new with their name, e-mail address, university and academic position.
  • Jury – up to five internal and two external jury members, chosen the same way.
  • Title – the thesis title in the local language and in English.
  • Thesis Statement – your statement that the work is your own and was carried out ethically. A standard text is shown below the box for you to copy.
  • Abstracts – the English abstract with its keywords, and the local abstract with its keywords and language. Switch the local abstract on only if your university asks for one.
  • Preface – your preface, and the total number of pages from Chapter 1 on.

Click Save in the toolbar to keep your changes. You can come back to any part at any time; the next PDF uses what you saved.

With a university template (Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, Multimedia University or the University of Malaya), the parts follow that university's front pages, so the list in the sidebar may differ.

The supervisor you set here is also the person you share the thesis with: see the article on sharing a thesis with your supervisor.
