Abstract

Dakar is one of the West African cities the most active and most attractive in urban art and graffiti today. The origins of this situation are to be seen in the context of social movements born in the late 1980s in response to environmental degradation, population and especially the youth mobilized to beautify the city walls of wallpaintings. These creations where political and religious figures dominated allowed the inhabitants to build a different city, closer to the national identity. The social and political demands remain at the heart of the festivals of graffiti and street art that multiply in Dakar since 2000. True open-air museums of urban arts have been developed in some territories where the works in dialogue daily with the public.
