A retrospective analysis is presented of the aetiology of mental handicap in 212 Rhodesian African children. In 23 per cent the cause of the mental retardation was primary (present at birth), in 27 per cent there was a well‐documented acquired cause and in the remaining 50 per cent the aetiology was unknown. The findings are discussed in relation to social and medical conditions in Rhodesia, and an outline is given of the authors' approach to the retarded child in Rhodesia. Les auteurs présentent une analyse rétrospective du retard mental chez 212 enfants africains de Rhodésie. Dans 23 pour cent des cas, la cause du retard mental était primitive (présente à la naissance), dans 27 pour cent des cas, on a relevé une cause acquise bien precise et l'origine est restée inconnue dans 50 pour cent des cas.
