The article describes an procedure of elaborating of study on the construction of the tunnels located in the highway system in Slovakia. Tunnel structures in Slovakia were designed, approved and implemented step by step in the course of several previous years (Ratkovský, 2005). The total length of one section tunnel tube amounts to 41 km. The exploratory drift is indispensable for the elaboration of safe and economically acceptable design of tunnel tubes to be built in the future. This applies in a full extent to the solution of tunnels in Slovakia. According to the design, the excavation will be carried out using a New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Also, some tunnels will be carried out using the cut-and-cover method and TBM. Any newly designed trafic-related construction has to meet requirements for the carrying capacity with conditions of state operation maintained.
