In this article the meaning of the term amm ha'arets (people of the land) is reconsidered as it appears in those Old Testament books which deal with the monarchial period in South Israel. The 1936-definition of Würthwein is to be supported in spite of some modifications suggested by more recent research in especially the socio-economic context in which the ‘people of the land' has played its role.
